Several articles about the ancient Near East and biblical backgrounds written by Cathey are now included in the new CSB Holy Land Illustrated Bible, which features more than 1,200 maps, charts, and photos, as well as 275 articles taken from the files of Biblical Illustrator magazine.
Those articles include Cathey’s contributions on Iron Age Warfare, the Goliath Inscription, the reigns of Babylonian and Persian kings (such as Nebuchadnezzar and Cyrus II), and the much feared Xerxes I, whose Persian Empire extended all the way from modern-day India to Greece.
G.B. Howell Jr., editor-in-chief of Biblical Illustrator magazine, said the magazine had given Broadman & Holman (publisher of the Christian Standard Bible) its archived files and it was from those files the Bible’s editors selected the articles to include in the new edition. The magazine’s Winter 2021 issue will be its last.
Howell said the Bible will now serve as “an enduring legacy and capstone” for the Biblical Illustrator, which has informed thousands of Southern Baptists and others about the history, politics, and geography behind the biblical texts.
Cathey holds a Ph.D. in Old Testament and has studied archaeology at the University of Leicester. He is currently completing a second Ph.D. in New Testament. He also teaches biblical languages, including Hebrew, Greek, Ugaritic, and Aramaic (among others).
